FAQ: Phone Numbers and Setup

Do I need to buy new phone numbers to use Doorkeep?
No, you have two options:
Option 1: Use Your Existing Numbers (Recommended) If you already have Twilio phone numbers for your property, we can connect Doorkeep to those existing numbers. This means residents continue calling the same numbers they're used to - no change for them, but now Doorkeep answers instead of going to voicemail.
Option 2: Get New Numbers Through Twilio If you don't have phone numbers yet, we'll help you purchase new Twilio phone numbers during setup. You can choose local numbers for each of your properties.
What is "BYOT" and why do you use it?
BYOT means "Bring Your Own Twilio." Instead of hiding phone costs in our monthly fee (like most services do), you pay Twilio directly for:
Phone numbers: ~$1/month per number
Call minutes: ~$0.02 per minute
SMS messages: ~$0.01 per message
Why this benefits you:
Complete transparency - no hidden phone costs
You own and control your phone numbers
No vendor lock-in - you can use your numbers elsewhere if needed
Often costs less than bundled pricing from other providers
How long does phone number setup take?
If you have existing Twilio numbers: 10-15 minutes during your Doorkeep onboarding.
If you need new numbers: About 30 minutes total - we help you set up your Twilio account, choose and purchase numbers, then connect them to Doorkeep.
Either way, you'll be taking AI-answered calls the same day you complete setup.
